Interview with Taylor Marek- New Media

Hey everyone,

Today I’m excited to introduce a good friend of mine, Taylor Marek, to you. Taylor is an expert in the new media niche and I think that he has a very important message to deliver to all of you. So let’s get to it:

Taylor Marek

Taylor, for the readers who haven’t heard of you and your website Taylormarek.com, why don’t you give us a brief overview of who you are, where you came from, and what your blog is about.

I am a 20 year old Gen Y Entrepreneur with a slant towards New Media/Social Media. Since the very beginning my parents have cultivated an entrepreneurial spirit with a communication emphasis, as they could see things in my life that would influence me later on. Very soon I got involved with the computer, started playing around with technology, then dabbled around in the Internet. What I saw amazed me. My parents setup guidelines, then let me explore. And explore I did. As soon as I found out about blogging and podcasting in early 2006, I knew I had to be here. That is when I started my blog. Originally I wanted to teach people about managing their personal finances, running a small business, and keeping them up to date with the latest tech news. Recently that has changed. Now I focus on the vibrant world that is New Media while branching out into Social Media Marketing.

How did you get started in blogging? What caused you to try and “break the mold” of the typical 9-5 job and make money off of the internet?

I heard about it at a conference in March of 2006. While I was there, I also heard about podcasting and decided to research into it. In April of the same year I launched my blog and later, in August of 2006, my podcast. What I noticed is that we are undergoing a fundamental shift in communication, everything we once thought safe is not anymore. As time went on, I realized that I could turn this hobby of mine into an actual business and live off of what I do online. Being an entrepreneur at heart, I jumped at the opportunity. I found out its easier than I thought, though there are certain steps to follow in order to actually increase it to full-time income status.

Now what exactly would you include in those “certain steps” that you have to follow to actually increase your income to a full-time status? Would you mind sharing that with us?
One of the main steps if I am going to make this a full-time income generating stream is that I need to buckle down and take it seriously. Treat it as a real business, it is a hobby no longer. The rest of the steps are covered in the 2010 Resolutions I made. I believe those will help anybody wanting to go down the same path. They set the framework. The rest of the steps are picked up as you go along.*

In just a few short years online, you are well on your way to earning a full time income off of the internet. Can you share how you have been so successful and where you see yourself in 5, 10, and even 20 years?

Much of what I view as a success really came from helping others out and befriending influential people in my industry. What landed me being mentioned in a book was simply helping out someone who needed help with a Junior Achievement class he was teaching in Arizona. He loved what I said, gave feedback as to how the class went, then went to my website. Liking what he saw, he contacted the Arizona JA chapter, which in turn contacted my local Milwaukee JA chapter. That landed me an interview in JA Wisonsin’s Monthly Newsletter. One of my influential friends then ran across my blog and the interview I landed. She was so impressed that she interviewed me for her book, Podcasting For Profit.

Where do I see myself in the future? I have a pretty good idea that I will be traveling the world speaking at events, be an accomplished author, possibly have directed my own movie, and be a key player in the New Media world.

Can you tell us how you got into podcasting and how it has helped your blog?

At the same conference I heard about blogging is when I heard about podcasting. Podcasting enabled me to share my thoughts via audio, which is much more powerful than words on a page. I am not only doing that, but also branding the audience to my voice. I can’t tell you how many times a complete stranger will introduce himself to be as a listener of my podcast, all from just hearing the sound of my voice. Podcasting enabled me to share my message with those who like to walk around listening to music/podcasts on their mp3 player. It is much more intimate and personal than a blog is, which is why I decided to stake my claim there.

What advice would you give to the beginner blogger or internet entrepreneur who is trying to find his identity and make money online?

My advice would be this: What do you absolutely love to do in your life that you cannot live without? What are you most passionate about? What defines YOU? Stake your internet territory on that and passionately show the world what you know. Follow in the footsteps of those who have gone ahead of you in this vibrant new world and you too will soon reap the same success.

I hope that by now, all of you who are thinking about getting into blogging are starting to get the message. Blog about your passion, your area of expertise. Don’t get into a certain niche because you believe that it will be profitable; trust me money can be made in any niche online. I hope that you’ve learned something from this interview and I’d like to personally thank Taylor for the interview.
